私が大学一年の時私は私の人生を変える一枚の写真と出会った。
When I was a freshman in college, I came across a photo that changed my life.
それはアラスカにある小さな島のシシュマレフと呼ばれる小さな村の美しい写真だった。
It was a beautiful photo of a small village called Shishmaref on a small island in Alaska.
最初は私はそのようなへき地で人間が暮らせることが信じられなかった。
At first, I couldn’t believe that people could live in such a remote place.
けれども地図上でその村を見つけたとき私は興味を惹かれ、そしてこの小さな村を訪れたいという衝動にかられた。
However, when I found the village on the map, I got interested and had an urge to go and visit this tiny village.
私は手紙を書こうと決めたが、しかし私は村のをだれもしらなかった。
I decided to write a letter, but I didn’t know anyone in the village.
そこで私はシシュマレフ村長様を書き、私に私を泊めてくれるかもしれない家族を紹介するように彼に依頼した。
So I wrote “Dear Mayor of Shishmaref,” asking him to introduce me to some family who might let me stay.
半年後私は私を招待してくれるという返信をうけとった。
Half a year later, I received a reply inviting me to visit.
1973年、私はシシュマレフに行き、そしてエスキモーの家族と夏を過ごした。
In 1973, I went to Shishmaref and spent the summer with an Eskimo family.
私は彼らと同じものを食べ、そして彼らとカリブー狩りにまで行った。
I ate the same food as they did, and even went caribou hunting with them.
地元の人たちはしばしば私を「エスキモーボーイ」と呼んだ。
The local people often called me 'Eskimo boy!'
毎日が私に新しい経験をもたらしたように思えた。
It seemed that every day brought me new experiences.
アラスカで暮らして見て私は人々がこのような辺境の地でさえも私たちが日本で暮らすのと同じように日々生活を営んでいることに気が付いた。
Living in Alaska, I discovered that people lead their everyday lives even in such an out-of-the-way place, just as we do back in Japan.
