どうして落語を英語で演じ始めたのですか？
Why did you start performing rakugo in English?
私がアメリカに住んでいた時、多くの人に「日本の冗談は聞いたことがありません。1つ教えてくれませんか？」と言われたんです。
When I lived in the United States, many people said, "I've never heard a Japanese joke. Could you tell me one?"
彼らは日本人にユーモアの分かる心があるとは思っていませんでした。
They didn't think the Japanese had a sense of humor.

Really?
はい。なので、私は世界中の人たちと日本のユーモアを共有したかったのです。
Yeah. So I wanted to share Japanese humor with people all over the world.
どのくらいの間演者をやっているんですか？
How long have you been a performer?
約25年間です。
For about twenty-five years.
私は落語会を開くために、多くの国を訪れてきました。
I've been to many countries to give rakugo shows.
これらの旅はとてもわくわくするものでした。
These tours have been very exciting.
英語の落語で苦労したことはありますか？
Have you had any difficulty with your rakugo performances in English?
はい、ありました。
Yes, I have.
時々日本と他国の文化的な違いがあります。
Sometimes there are cultural differences between Japan and other countries.
例えば、私たちは麺を食べる時に音を立てます。
For example, we make sounds when we eat noodles.
他国では、これは悪いマナーなんです。
In other cultures, this is bad manners.
なので私はこのような日本の習慣を説明する必要があります。
So I have to explain Japanese customs like this.
そうすれば、全員が会を楽しむことができます。
Then everyone can enjoy the show.

What have you learned from your performances around the world?
まあ、私の意見では、私たちは違うけれど、笑いのような共通点もあるということです。
Well, in my opinion, we're different, but we also have things in common, like laughter.
私たちが落語の最中には、一緒に笑うことができます。
We can laugh together during a rakugo performance.

将来の計画は何ですか？
What's your future plan?
笑いを広め続けることです。
To continue spreading laughter.
これがより平和な世界をつくるのだと、私は思います。
