Will human beings

be able to go there

someday?

100年以上前に
More than one hundred years ago

天文学者たちは初めて火星を見た
astronomers first looked at Mars
-
明るい赤い星（である火星）
a bright red star
-
望遠鏡を通して
through telescopes
-
彼らは気づいた
They noticed

表面のたくさんの線に
many lines on the surface

それらの線は運河ではないかと思われた
The lines were thought to be canals
-
ある種の知的な生物によって造られたのかもしれない
perhaps made by some kind of intelligent beings

人々は想像した
people imagined

「火星人」はタコのように見えると
that a Martian looked like an octopus

They thought

it must have a big head

and must be super -intelligent

They have long ,thin legs and arms

due to the weak gravity on Mars

Until just a few decades ago

some people still believed

火星人がいると
that there were Martians

who looked like that

About fifty years ago

宇宙船が火星に着陸した
a spacecraft landed on Mars

そして地球に写真を送り返した
and sent photographs back to Earth

人々は思った
people wondered

その惑星をどんな感じなのか
what the planet looked like

そして、もしいるとしたら何が
and what, if anything

lived there
